Mozilla Shumway

Shumway Shumway is an HTML5 technology experiment that explores building a faithful and efficient renderer for the SWF file format without native code assistance. Shumway is community-driven and supported by Mozilla. Our goal is to create a general-purpose, web standards-based platform for parsing and rendering SWFs.

That's exactly what Mozilla has in mind with Shumway, which aims to run Flash-format files in a browser without the use of a plug-in. Our take: Nice idea, although it seems like it'll be a while. As it says on the page: Available in Nightly on Desktop for all platforms, preff'd off Will not ride the trains for now, so not available on Aurora, Beta, and Release And the section has the title of Current Shumway In Nightly thus meaning that Shumway can only be enabled in this way (by going to about:config and then changing the option shumway.disabled) in the Firefox Nightly builds, this.

Product Roadmap & User Stories [In Progess]

  • As a Firefox user, I have a more stable browsing experience because Firefox natively renders Flash ads, increasing my user satisfaction, usage, and likelihood to recommend.
  • As a Firefox user, I have a more responsive browsing experience because Flash ads in background tabs are throttled, increasing my user satisfaction, usage, and likelihood to recommend.
  • As a Firefox user, I can opt in to Firefox native Flash support so that I can help Mozilla test the feature.
  • As a Firefox user, I have a mechanism to revert to the Adobe Flash player for specific content blocks, so I am not broken in cases where Firefox's native rendering is insufficient.
